Scammer - Wish I knew about this site...  Top

  • Hello,

I'm new to this site, and I wish I knew about it before. I ran into a Craigslist ad for a receptionist/personal assistant job a few days ago. I sent him my resume, and I filled out the application, which did not include any credit information or my social security number. I ran into this site because I was increasingly becoming paranoid about this job "opportunity."

This scammer has already been reported, but what should I do now that I have stopped communication with this scammer? Should I be worried that I sent off my resume to him? I imagine that some of my worries could go into receiving junk mail and spam on my computer. I imagine that, if I had an IM conversation with him, I would have started having computer problems. Since I stopped communication before the job actually started, what should I worry about and what should I do?

  • Since you didn't give out your ss # or fill out a credit report, it's probably a money laundering scam. Just be on the look out for any money orders, checks mailed to the house. Should you receive one, report it immediately and do not cash or desposit into your account.

CL is full of scam job postings. If you decide to continue to use it in your job search, just send a qualification summary (from a desposible yahoo account) that just includes your level of education, your job title, industry and the duties you have performed. Let them contact you via email should they be interested in speaking with you further. Also include a note to why you are just sending a summary of your qualificaitons.

Should you receive a reply, don't be so quick to send your resume. Any messages from a private email (yahoo, hotmail, live, biz, info, aol, rocketmail, etc) delete, it's a scam. Should the sender’s address look legit (ex: marykay@bsfcorp.com), google it (www.bsfcorp.com). If it’s a scam you will be directed to an administrative page, usually from gator, msn or yahoo or a subdomain (http://bsfcorp.com).

Sometimes a scammer will use the name of a legit company. Should you find the website, try and find the name and email of the person that contacted you. Compare the contact information on the company site to the email address you received (sometimes it's different). Search the careers on the site and see if it is posted, if it's listed apply directly on the site - bypass CL.

Please post on here the email you received.
