Flaker

This Is Awesome, But What Happens When...  Top

  • I sell and have sold many things on Craigslist in the past five years--about 40% of the time having to deal with no call/no shows, under cutters (agree on a price but try to bargain you down when you meet), and just all around sketchy individuals that really make you feel uncomfortable--and I only wish Flakelist had been around sooner! However, I couldn't help but think of a potential snag in this system that I'm not sure anyone has brought to attention. When a flake has been reported, what is to stop them from then turning around and reporting the reportee (non-flake) out of spite? In other words, it's nice that anyone can report a flake, but what is to stop a flake from reporting someone legitimate? Because, honestly that seems exactly like the kind of thing a flake would do. There are a lot of flakes out there that are "Double Agents". For all you know, I could be a flake pretending to care enough to write this in preparation for someone that I expect to report me because it might make me seem legitimate!

I know that for websites like the Better Business Bureau, a person can make a claim/report, the report is then sent to the organization/accused and they have a chance to refute the claim and explain why, to which the claimant can then refute once more. I thought that was a good system because it allowed not only the users to get their say, but also for the accused to defend themselves, and depending upon the answers given it can really make things clear as to who the real ass is, not just for the individual, but for everyone reading the claim!

    Thoughts...?
  • Mythicislepro, once in a while this happens. When it does and someone complains, we remove both flakes as to be fair to each party. If a particular flake has been submitted by more than a few persons, we concur that they probably are a flake and let the submission stand. We also run these types of situations by one of our attorneys and let them decide what they ultimately think should be done.

Usually, though, most of our submissions have been legitimate scammers. Only once or twice have we had an actual scammer try to scam us into being removed. There was one that tried to scam people with those fake money orders that also tried to "threaten" us with legal action, etc...because he was on here several times and had rippped people off for thousands of dollars. When we linked them to the news article about a warrant out for the scammers arrest, a strange thing happened...we never heard back from them ever again. icon_cool
