I answered a CL ad for an office assistant/front desk receptionist, and got a response from our good friend Scott Doyle, he of the lovely Wife and 2 Beautiful daughters. As noted in the previous Scott Doyle thread below, this is your standard "send the mark a fake check and get him to deposit it" scam. Here's Scott:

[A couple of observations. 1) this email actually came from scttdl03@gmail.com. Looks like "Scott" is getting sloppy. 2) Who the hell emails job offers at 5:46 on a Sunday morning?]

[Another observation: A part-time work-from-home job that pays $600 a week? Sounds too good to be true!]

I have the first task waiting for you, I just need you to indicate your willingness to work. [Another observation: What the hell is "the 1099"? Is that anything like "The 4400"?]
Funds required to make the Donations will be sent to you from one of my financial aides in form of Money order...You will make arrangements to buy some stuff for the kids in nearby store around you and mail them out.

Since "Scott" went to the trouble of sending me a second email for a second CL ad, I thought I'd respond to that one, too. I recently moved from Rhode Island, and the post office is still forwarding mail from my old address, so I sent the following reply to the second email:
Good morning, Mr. Doyle.
Thank you for your interest, and I am well at the moment. I am pleased that you found my c.v. satisfactory. My contact information is as follows: Carter Monaghan, XXXXX XXXX XXXXXX, RI 02XXX. I have no cell phone, unfortunately, but I am willing to accept your offer, and I can be contacted via e-mail at XXXXXXX@yahoo.com
Thank you for your consideration.
Carter Monaghan
XXXXXX, Rhode Island
(I got the same email in response. Stay tuned.)

"Carter Monaghan" got an answer from "Scott Doyle" this morning:
Dear Carter, " Read Thoroughly To Understand Instructions"
How are you doing today ?? Again i must apologize for the breakdown in communication. I am glad to Inform you that money has been sent to you in form of a Check which is your First Assignment would be delivered today at the address which you provided via USPS COURIER, please be home to receive the package. Below is the transaction Details.
Since I no longer live in Rhode Island, I will unfortunately not be home to receive Scott's package. Gosh, I hope nothing goes wrong!
Transaction Details
----------------------------------
DELIVERY COURIER : USPS
USPS TRACKING NUMBER :
The Package contains a Check : $1967.98
Scott seems to have accidentally left off the USPS tracking number. How careless of him! I'll have to let him know!
Upon the receipt of the parcel, go directly to your BANK and have it DEPOSITED, cash may be available instantly, if not wait till Tomorrow. Once the funds are available after deposit, you may proceed with the instructions.
However, I am donating the money to the orphans. I contacted the fostercare home, and I was given the list of the items to be bought, the items are much and will cost a lot to get them shipped, so we have reached an accord, They will be getting the items themselves.
Once you have the money, you are to take out $50, this is the commission you receive on the first assignment, you are to make a Wire Transfer of $1917 at the closest Western Union location to you, I am sure you have one close to you, please note, you are to deduct Western Union Transfer Charges from the $1917. Go over to the nearest Western Union location and send the Money "In Minutes" to the fostercare's treasurer at the information below:
Name: Steven Collins
Address: 78 E Chicago Ave
City: Westmont
State: IL
Zip Code: 60559
Now, a quick look at East Chicago Avenue in Westmont on Google Maps shows that there *is* nothing at number 78, so how will "Steven" get the money? I'm not sure how that works.
Once you have completed the assignment, you are to email me back with the following details:
The Western Union Transfer Details Which Includes :
*THE 10 DIGIT *MONEY TRANSFER CONTROL NUMBER* (which will be issued for your transaction upon completion).
*THE SENDER'S FULL NAMES ( Which is your name) AND ADDRESS AS FILLED ON THE FORM.
*THE EXACT AMOUNT SENT (AFTER TRANSFER CHARGES DEDUCTED FROM $1917).
I will be waiting on your email, complete with the details, please get to it as soon as you can, the transaction has to be fully completed as soon as you take delivery. However, I will have your weekly salary sent to you next week. I will be waiting to read back from you ASAP today and i also have some other assignment for you to do this week. I want you to be rest assured that I'll never stress you at all in any assignment given to you and i promise to pay your fees weekly as we both agreed.
Take good care of yourself and have a blessed day,
Sincerely,
Scott.
This is the reply I sent him:
Dear Scott,
I am in receipt of your email, and the instructions are clear. However, I notice that you did not include the USPS tracking number on your package. It would be terrible for the orphans if your check went astray and I was unable to locate it. Can you reply to me with the tracking number?
With all due respect,
Carter Monaghan

A response from "Scott" to "Carter Monaghan":
EO 916 025 662 US. Thats the tracking number, however USPS failed to ship today so your package will be delivered tomorrow instead.
That's a real tracking number, BTW. Sent via Express Mail from La Crosse, FL 32658. An Express Mail envelope with proof of delivery costs (checking USPS site) $21.30. But that's okay, he'll get the money back after I deposit the check and send him his $1917.
Incidentally, some quick work with a calculator reveals that 21.3 goes into 1917 exactly 90 times. So, he breaks even if 1 out of 90 people who respond to his scam actually falls for it, makes money if it's 1 out of 89 or less, and loses money if it's 1 out of 91 or more.
Hmmmmm.

I'm reluctant to involve the authorities, since I did respond under an alias. Anyway, "Carter" got another email from "Scott":
Morning Carter,
USPS failed to ship the package yesterday, however it is set to be delivered at your address today. Please make yourself available to receive and complete the task as instructed in my previous email. Email me as soon as you take delivery of the parcel.
Terrible to think that Scott might have wasted all that postage!
Also, Scott has finally responded to "Johnny":
Dear Johnny,
How are you doing today? I apologize for the lack of communication, however I have just received word from my courier service provider (USPS) that your First assignment package will be delivered to your address on Saturday. I would implore you to make yourself available to receive and complete the task with minimal fuss. I will email you with detailed instructions to follow in executing the task later on. I expect a prompt response to this email so i can be convinced that you have received notification.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Scott.
Well, if Scott wants a prompt response, then a prompt response he shall have!
Dear Scott,
Thank you for alerting me to this. I'll mark Saturday on my calendar. I'm eager to get to work, and I hope to prove to you that your trust in me is not misplaced. Give my best to your family.
Sincerely,
Johnny Pez
Let's see, $21.30 times two is $42.60 . . .

I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with two different Scott Doyles. The one communicating with Johnny Pez uses the email scttdl03@gmail.com, while the one communicating with Carter Monaghan uses scttdonn2@gmail.com. I'll call them Scott3 and Scott2.
Anyway, Carter got an email from Scott2:
FIRST ASSIGNMENT UPDATE????
I am very much concerned as you are yet to provide an update on the status of your first assignment since you took delivery of my package yesterday. Get back to me with an update soon as you receive this email.
Scott.
Now, this is peculiar. A quick check of the tracking number shows that Scott2's check was indeed delivered to my old house in Newport, RI yesterday afternoon. What's peculiar is that, as far as I know, there's nobody living at my old house. We moved to Pittsburgh after the bank started foreclosure on us, then after we were gone the bank changed its mind and told us it wanted us to sell the house, so AFAIK it's just sitting there empty. I shall have to investigate.

Mystery solved! Since it wasn't my actual name on Scott2's package, the post office didn't forward it to Pittsburgh. Instead, they stuck it under the door of my old house in Newport and marked it "delivered".
So, I'm sending Scott2 the following reply:
Dear Scott,
I'm dreadfully sorry, but I'm afraid we've both been the victims of foul play. Apparently, while I was out, my neighbor's boy Eddie, a shifty sort of ne'er-do-well, stole the check from my house and has absconded with it. You're going to have to put a stop-payment on your check, and send me a replacement.
My deeping apologies,
Carter Monaghan
I wonder if he'll actually mail me another check.

And this morning, Johnny's check from Scott3 arrived. The tracking number shows that the envelope was mailed from Bethpage NY, but the return address on the envelope is Kathy Fischer, 713 National Ave, Sheboygan, WI 53081-2751. The check itself is from a Mr. Charles P. Blankenship, 24 Roberts Landing, Poquoson VA 23662. What a tangled web Scott3 weaves!
Johnny also got an email from Scott3, identical to the one Carter Monaghan got from Scott2, ie the " Read Thoroughly To Understand Instructions" one above.
I responded to his email thusly:
Dear Scott,
Your package arrived this morning, but when I opened it, I found it was empty. Are you certain you included the check?
Johnny Pez
Scott2 has yet to respond to Carter Monaghan's apologetic email above. Stay tuned!
