What is Craigslist's problem?  Top

  • I have used CL for various things, but it works better in more populated areas. There are real posts there, you just have to find them. Anything with just the CL email and not proper contact info, is probably not a safe bet. Real people and companies put up people's names and numbers. You should not fault CL for thinking that people have common sense and would know the difference
  • What I typically do is request information on the company first before sending any personal info. If they provide the information I requested I then look up the name of the company (usually on Google) to verify whether or not they actually exist. If so then I contact the company (either via phone or email) to verify if they did, in fact, post the ad on CL.

Once I'm certain the ad is legit I will then submit my resume directly to the email or mailing address that is listed on the company's website.

  • A very wise thing to do, MushMush. Thanks for posting. Hopefully others will follow your advice. icon_biggrin

  • You can also verify info from the Better Business Bureau...I am learning the hard way. I just moved and need a job and sent my resume to a lot of postings on Craigslist, but have received alot of scammer responses, which I am now worried because I sent my resume with my address and phone on it. So I am going to go about this job hunting the old fashioned way and just go in personally and apply. Also if you know the company, you can apply directly on their website.
  • I hope everyone finds this as useful as I have- a full list of craigslist scams

  • I recently applied to 3 possible rentals off of Craigslist in Olympia, Washington ... only to find out 2 of them were scammers. One of these were from Wilma Hunter Properties (wilma.hunter@hunter-properties.net), asking me to follow this link to fill out the credit report information FIRST and that I would be the first one to be rented to (//leasing-reports.com/property04074/). The other was from a "Krystal" with a responding email address of krystalcourterjlpc@hotmail.com, and she asked me to follow a link (://track.got2jump.com/SHeP ) to print out my credit score. I've emailed Craigslist to let them know, and absolutely no response back. Maybe they have too many scammer reports to treat mine as special? (laughing!)
  • Suggest that IF the help wanted ad sounds possibly "for real".. I respond with my letter of interest but close it explaining the many scam attempts assoiciated with CL postings. I then ask for their company name etc. I also have a "shadow" resume that I can submit, it has NO dates, NO contact information, NO employer name just brief descriptions under each job title that I have held.
  • Most postings, especially job ads are scams. Anyone who would respond to a blind ad with not company or contact info is setting themselves up for disaster. I don't bother applying anymore to any ad on this site.

Any job I did get (years ago) through this site was a result of my online resume which is mainly comprised of my previous work experience. I never put my name, dates or companies I have worked for. If someone is interested, they will contact me. I also require with their resume request a detailed job description and a link to their website. I delete immediately any emails from hotmail, aol or google.

Have you nice folks submitted these people using our "Report A Flake" feature?

Yep, just reported a scammer this morning. The real letdown is when you're looking for work, get the email, open it with anticipation and find out they want you to do a credit report check. The real employers out there have their ads buried under the fake stuff and it's bad for everyone.

Agreed and it's shameful on the parts of the scammers. Unfortunately, they don't care about anyone but themselves.

  • so glad I came across this site & thankful for everyone's postings...it sure has helped me weed thru the scam listings!
  • Personally I think we should all as a community and rally together to get Craigslist offline! People have been scammed, frauded, physically hurt, and some have even died using this site. http://a11news.com/1729/craigslist-killer. I once posted on Craigslist that I was looking for a job as a personal assistant and was bombared with job offers wanting me to cash fake checks for them and then another scam is making fake checks. People beware. I really do hate Craigslist the mere mention of the name is like saying Satan or Lucifer.
  • Yea I agree. Craigslist was great when it first came out. Heck even I would get a personal reply back from the staff. But ever since they went global it has all went downhill. It's hardly any fun to even look on there anymore because 90% of the ads are just a bunch of useless spam ads or scams; one has to weed through the riff raff to try to find a legitimate ad.

We need a site that is scam free, verified!! Where we actually call the people before an ad is placed and do a thorough screening. Anyone that still slips through is automatically banned. Maybe someday... icon_biggrin

  • I agree with you. I am at a lost for words. I have been trying to find legit work for weeks and all I get are people who want me to start a business, go back to school or work for them in their money laundering business. I'm beyond fed up. I really don't know what to do anymore. If anyone is reading this and they know of legit work in the California area. please let me know. icon_smile
  • Yes, this is a big popular scam right now. Scamming the federal taxpayer by overcharging students at private "universities". Really they are offering job training at exorbitant prices. I spoke to one young victim who was getting a Medical Assistant certificate for $30,000 which is available from the local community college at a small fraction of the price. They have their students use federal loan money to pay for this outrage. I have gotten at least 5 calls trying to sell me further education from job applications and I am on the federal "Donotcall.Gov" list. They bypass telemarketing laws this way.
