I also applied for a clerical job on Craigslist and got this response:

As of 6 months ago direct deposit or payroll checks are integrated in to our standard payroll process but you will receive a pay-stub every week. In the last few years we had too many employees complain about not having a bank account or having issues cashing their checks, so we decided to make a change and we've had a lot less problems with payroll in the last 6 months.

Our company is not affiliated with the company that provides this re-loadable card; it can be used just like a regular debit card that you can fund at your convenience online or over the phone. You can withdraw your money at any ATM without fees or pay bills online, it's basically as good as cash. I looked up the Domain and it looked pretty legit, I guess. So I clicked on the link and filled it out. After clicking "Submit" I got to an error page. That looked suspicious, but then I already filled out the form. Sigh.....They suck. They really do. What kind of people are they? How do they sleep at night or live with themselves? They need prayers.

Some retail companies do pay via cards instead of direct deposit or paycheck. The cards are issued by the company you are working for (they are free and any fees incurred are when you withdraw $) and have the company name and logo on it. Your salary is drawn from an account that is set up by the company with their bank. You are never ask to sign up for a card online. Once you terminate your association with the company the card is no longer valid.

At the time of hire (actually sitting with the store manager, not hired directly through the internet)you fill out and submit paperwork and about a week later you receive (are handed)the card. You will also be issued a personal account number or PIN so that you can review the available funds on the banks website and your salary history on the company website.

The procedure to retrieve funds from the card varies from company to company and you will receive the instructions when you receive the card.
